  1. Rivals Seize On Troubles of Facebook

    From The New York Times:

    Michael Chisari, a developer in Chicago, said the escalating privacy concerns around Facebook spurred him to resurrect Appleseed, an open source project to develop free software that would allow users to set up their own social networking hubs.

    “In the past month, there has been a sea change in the number of people looking for alternatives,” he said. “A year ago, nobody was interested in my project, and now I have about 80 supporters signed up.”

    Mr. Chisari, who estimates that Appleseed is six months away from opening to the public, is not the only one trying to create an open alternative.

  3. Facebook challenged by ambitious upstarts

    Appleseed mentioned in BBC article:

    Michael Chisari founded Appleseed in 2004, to try and build a simple social network. The question he pondered at the time was "If two sites were running my software, why couldn't they interact?"

    Like Diaspora, Appleseed's approach is one of a growing band of "distributed social networking" projects, where anybody can set up a social network, and the different systems should be able to interact with each other.

    Mr Chisari said: "I compare it to the 1990's, when AOL and CompuServe (early Internet Service Providers) were both very popular, but were 'walled gardens'".

    "Users on AOL could only e-mail other AOL users, same with CompuServe. Then, e-mail started getting popular and some people switched, but it forced people to ask why they were being walled off," he said.

    Mr Chisari pointed out that both AOL and Compuserve "were forced to open up ... so that their users could participate with the rest of the world."

  6. Appleseed v0.7.3 released

    Appleseed v0.7.3, with all of the changes added to the svn repository over the past couple years, is now available as an installable package. So if you have access to a unix web server, and want to test your own Appleseed node, download this file:

    Update from Michael Chisari on Appleseed:

    "It's been a whirlwind past few days, and I want to apologize to anybody whose sent me an email or an invite request that I haven't gotten to yet. I'm doing my best to get through the backlog.

    "In the meantime, I started a fundraising page for The Appleseed Project. I figure if Diaspora can raise almost $200k, we should be able to at least get to the $10k goal (maybe more!). All funds will go towards full time development of Appleseed so we can push hard for the finish line of a 1.0 release.

    For all the attention the Diaspora project has been getting, largely thanks to the New York Times, another alternative called OneSocialWeb has been desperately trying to raise even just a couple of eyebrows.

    Which is frustrating to them, they say, because the goals of both projects are perfectly aligned, while OneSocialWeb is self-reportedly much further ahead of Diaspora in many ways.

    When Wired.com called for an open alternative to Facebook last Friday, lamenting the company’s untrammeled desire to control your online identity and reconfigure the world’s privacy norms, reader response was overwhelming, with hundreds of comments and ironically, thousands of “Like” votes on Facebook...

    The recent news also reinvigorated developer Michael Chisari, who decided to reopen his open source social networking project called Appleseed, which already has working code that allows users on different sites to “friend” each other and interoperate.

    Chisari describes the project as “seeing the user as an online citizen, as opposed to a consumer to be targeted”, which he says is in “stark contrast to current social networking websites, who rely heavily on ad placement and data mining of their users.”
